Modis is just the type of restaurant I like to write about: Everything came together to make a perfect dinning experience.

Let’s say you want to spend an enjoyable evening with a special someone or friends and the evening is going to be centered around dining out. Why not drive to Breckenridge if that’s where one of the best meals can be found? It’s only an hour from most places in Denver and there won’t be any traffic! You wanted to talk with your companions anyway. And, you’re going to Love Modis.

Modis is the new It spot in Breckenridge, without the prices that normally accompany a world class meal. I loved the ambiance. Owner Eric Manula exposed some of the 100 year old brick, opened up the ceiling to utilize the sky lights and hung some attractive art.

Service tends to be a problem in mountain towns and yet Modis had servers who were attentive without smothering and not only knew their menu inside and out, but were clearly proud to be there.

The food exceeded my expectations and the buzz around town. To start I tried their Tea Smoked Duck & Oyster Mushroom Tart ($8). It was phenomenal! Why serve crab cakes when you can serve Thai Prawn Cakes ($7)? Just the sauce on this dish, a mint peanut watermelon salsa with lemon oil, shows the artistic level to which every dish is taken.

Modis has a beautiful selection of salads; I’m eager to try the Beet Salad with baby spinach, goat cheese, toasted pine nuts and pear ($7). You know it’ll be a work of art.

Before I tell you about my main entrée, let me list some of what I passed up: Pork Loin served with sweet potato chorizo hash ($15), Sautéed Jumbo Shrimp served with lemon butter white wine sauce with capers & garlic smothering herbed linguini ($15), Pan Fried Duck Breast ($16) and Modis Thai Bouillabaisse with mussels, salmon, halibut, shrimp, lemon grass and coconut broth ($17). But the Pan Fired All Natural Chicken Breast stuffed with hazelnut brie apricot stuffing was raved about by so many I had to acquiesce. We’d all eat a lot more chicken if this is how everyone served it: moist, tender and filled with flavor.

By now I trust most of my readers are in their cars, heading west and are closing in on Georgetown. But for those still reading, I tried their White Chocolate Lime Cheesecake ($7) for desert and loved it. Just to show a modicum of objectivity, I thought the Pear Sachette ($7) a little bland - a dark chocolate, hazelnut drizzle would have made a nice compliment.

Modis offers a large wine selection with some notable selections that consistently receive ratings over 90 points as well as offerings from boutique wineries. Most wines are available by the bottle or glass.

Calling ahead for reservation would be wise: 970/453-4330. They’re located at 113 S. Main St., Breckenridge. They’re open 7 days a week starting at 5pm.
